Autumn Dip and It's Beginnings

Autumn Dip and It's Beginnings

This week we roll out a special beer that has been a long time in the making for both the recipe, the name and the label!

The Autumn Dip is the result of two initiatives we launched in 2022. The first being an illustration competition and mentorship opportunity for 3rd year Illustration and Animation students at UniSA.

The second being our inaugural Fleurieu Amateur Brewers Competition in collaboration with the Fleurieu Beer Festival.

At Shifty Lizard we are passionate about supporting up-and-coming talent, and reached out to UniSA’s 3rd year Illustration and Animation students, we wanted to reach out to budding illustrators and give them the opportunity to work on a real life project while gaining invaluable experience working towards deadlines, briefs out of their wheelhouse and setting files up for print production. We hoped that we could help them grow as designers and be able to pass on some extra knowledge that they could take away with them as they graduated and headed into the work force.

We set a brief for the 3rd year Illustration and Animation students to create a name and label that could be used for one of our limited release beers scheduled to be released in the autumn of 2023. The students were set a deadline and some strict guidelines to match a real world brief. Once they had submitted their designs we selected 3 finalists (this was no easy feat as the standard was very high). The finalists then worked alongside our design team to enhance their designs and give themselves the best chance to take out first place. Once this was completed, the final designs were posted on our social platforms and voted on by the public. See the final three here

From over 600 public votes we had a winner in Tyler Carson with his Autumn Dip label you can see featured! Tyler has now gone on to work with another local Brewery and hopes to gain more work within the industry as he grows his portfolio. You can see more of his work here @carso.creations

Next came The Fleurieu Amateur Brewers Comp, a brain child of Head Brewer Lee Stone and something he has wanted to kick off for a long time now! With a background in home brewing Lee recognises the struggles and the joys of brewing on a small system and wanted to get back in touch with those that love brewing for brewing’s sake.

We teamed up with the Fleurieu Beer Festival and some of our local brewing friends like Kick Back Brewing, Snapper Point and new kids on the block Penny Red Brewing to bring the initial 20+ contestants and brews down to a final 4.

FABC JUDGING

From there we had a guest judging panel at Fleurieu Beer festival which saw our first winner in Andre Mazany take out the prize!

Andre was then invited to collaborate with Lee on how to scale up his recipe. join him on the brew day and finally to bring it to the masses (well, some of the masses as this is a small batch and we are tipping it won’t last long 😊)

And now the time has come to bring the beer, the name and the label all together in one neat little package.

You can get it on tap or take it away at our Brewstillery in Willunga or grab it at our online store!

It has been an incredible journey and we as a team have loved bringing the students and home brewers in to experience our day to day life. We look forward to seeing what these initiatives produce in the coming years!
